Here’s Why Your Beer Belly May Be Killing You
CNN – A new study concludes that excess belly fat, even if you are skinny everywhere else, may be even more deadly than being obese or overweight.
And that’s saying something when you know that being obese already increases your likelihood of having a heart attack, a stroke, diabetes or even cancer.
In other words, your beer belly may be killing you.
This study appears in the latest edition of Annals of Internal Medicine. After looking at data from over 15,000 people, researchers estimate that men with pot bellies have twice the mortality risk of people who are just overweight or obese. Women with a similar fat distribution had 1.5 times the risk for death.
“Keep in mind this doesn’t give people license to eat anything they want to even out their fat,” Lopez-Jimenez said. “I’ve gotten a few of those notes that say that is what some people plan to do. I hope they are joking.”
You don’t have to give up the beer but you need to be smarter about your consumption. It wouldn’t hurt to drink in moderation and start preparing some healthy meals instead of overloading on junk food. I know I lost a few of you at moderation.
Also, make sure you’re getting about 30 minutes of exercise each day. I have a few friends that have beer bellies. They commonly point to other people that are bigger than them and say, “Well, at least I’m not that fat!” Who knew the obese person may actually be “healthier!?”
No matter how big or small you may be, it’s always a good decision to put good, healthy foods into your body. It’s not as difficult as it may seem. Start by eliminating one unhealthy meal or snack each day and add a nutritious meal in it’s place.
So instead of that chocolate chip cookie or those salty chips you have tucked away in your desk drawer at work, try a handful of dry roasted peanuts or sliced apples with peanut butter. There are so many better alternatives. Remember, it’s never too late to start making healthy decisions.
